ACROSS THE BODY

This autobiographical video documents the pilgrimage to the Holy city Jerusalem. By the end of the journey, the artist marks her body with BADGE OF PRIDE (HAJJI TATTOO) an iconographic image tattooed on her right arm as her Armenian cultural religious heritage.

And in contrast, this body project experience transcends from its traditional religiousness to become a pure form of self-narration, self-construction and a live archive of her breathing identity.

BAB TUMA - old city damascus
7 min short film
Synopsis

Bab Tuma is a 7 minutes short experimental video based on cinematic essay that reconstructs the childhood memory relayed through the family’s female bodies.
It’s the story of my mother’s parent’s house where we spent most of our summer as children vacating with our grand mother. 7 years of unpaid rent, this captivating old city Damascus ballade in the Christian quarter through the GATE of THOMAS (BAB=DOOR TUMA=THOMAS) once called GATE OF VENUS during the roman empire reveals the story of these women’s struggle to preserve the property: the family treasure, my grandmothers’ villa.

reviewing my project,
I realize it wasn't about the anger of being born or existence more than my confusion or my refusal of mirroring my mother's socio-political choice: status:getting married: MARRIED!

An option that certainly vaguely becomes the only alternative "defacto" for the woman to embrace to move on decently within the social living standards norms!!!

however, identifying the choices existing and living throughout my past 6 years in the west
across the ocean... I believe the video will inquire the females to approve the question of the existence of these alternatives and raise affirmative to stand on her own ...

When motion stops! Still alive it is!

register all ur thoughts!
at this stage...i can only post the "sois disant" synopsis
just while i was in Beirut i was thinking of shooting something with a friend of mine a topic related to birth and desired to make a video piece installation about the moment of birth and specifically that moment when the newborn's head out off the light to darkness
and there falls all the anger!!!
so i wrote this email to my friend regarding what i wanted to shoot
and figure out how we were going to illustrate through what kind of performance...

"Dear,
I want to have 9 projectors for the 9 months /9 stages of a pregnant woman’s belly
…and I like to project on the belly the different stages of the fetus..
enfin..i want to add a sound that will reflect the internal anger of woman while she Is
pregnant…and to be able to reflect on the war as a result for the anger source coming
originally from the pregnant future mother.

I wonder sometimes .. the world is really anger…and I wonder sometimes if
That anger comes from there… there is gotta be a deep relation between those 2 worlds.

Reflecting on that … I guess I can’t add more right now…
But I will think about the sound and the audio..that can play a major role in defining
The visual…which I see it as you standing dramatic reflecting focused.. yet derived....
